How to work smarter, not harder!
Working for an at least eight hours per day in a corporate world regardless of job or industry is very nerve-racking. As you almost spend half of your life working and end up with no time to live your life? Are you one of those who says “I am busy and I am doing a lot”? To the point that you do not have enough time each day to achieve all your task at once. As a result, you invariably feel like you’re always behind and that’s just not beneficial for your productivity and health. And the only alternative you have is to submit a resignation letter to your boss. But wait, quitting is not an option. Remember that your family depends on you and you have monthly bills to pay that will push you to work harder.
Here are some tips on working smarter not harder:
1. Morning routine or ritual.
Engaging in a morning routine or ritual makes you become productive and efficient for the whole day. For an instance, taking a cup of tea or coffee and greeting your office mates with good morning messages before sitting on your desk will induce you a good vibe.
2. Check mails regularly.
Make a habit of going over your emails daily as this is one way on how you can catch updates and significant information. It is important to be part of your daily routine as there might be important updates or information that needs to be done immediately.
3. Create a to-do list.
Hundreds of tasks with deadlines will make you crazy thus having a list of tasks to do is very helpful. Identify most urgent tasks to less critical and set priority level.
4. Be well organized.
Being organized will also help you become productive. Putting things in order in your work station as well as in your files is highly effective when you are working. You can easily track where your files are saved. Create folders if necessary. This could save your time if you possess an organized workplace.
5. Always carry a notebook and pen.
Basic yet powerful tool. Always have a notebook and pen so that ideas that pop into your head, you can jot down. Write down the details whenever your boss gives you instructions and tasks what to do as you can’t remember all at once thus you can move back anytime to review. During meeting, write down the details that are important especially if there are tasks accounted to you.
5. Time management.
Since being well organized can save time. You’ll definitely need to learn how to manage that time. Your to-do list plays important role in time management. Its all about setting realistic deadlines and S.M.A.R.T. objectives.
6. Automate task.
Another way how to work smart is automation. Utilize all resources to automate things, perfect example is excel macro. If you’re heavily loaded with spreadsheets and raw data for analysis, it’s very helpful. This could save you a lot of time and can focus on other important works.
7. Do things one at a time and stop multitasking.
Many people often believe they can accomplish more if they do many things at the same time.
As neuroscientist Earl Miller said in a research news, “People can’t multitask very well, and when people say they can, they’re deluding themselves,” And, he said, “The brain is very good at deluding itself.” “Switching from task to task, you think you’re actually paying attention to everything around you at the same time. But you’re actually not,” Miller said. “You’re not paying attention to one or two things simultaneously, but switching between them very rapidly.”
Instead, we are more productive if we are doing things one at a time as we tend to think about efficient way on how to execute the task at hand.
8. Delegate task.
Delegation is one of the most significant and effective management skills. This is one way of developing skills and talent of your colleagues. You can also encourage them by delegating tasks as this means you trust your people that they can do the job.
9. Reward yourself and relieve your stress.
Take a break. Go out with colleagues and friends. Eat, sleep, or travel.

Some employees’ mindset is working for work’s sake and spending time doing so much but accomplishing so little. Your goal is to accomplish something at least, if you cannot complete all tasks. Working hard takes effort and endurance, but working smart makes you become efficient and productive.
